Raining cat'S and Dog'S !
Well well well...It has been raining in chennai like heaven's bladders were full and were waiting to explode! Chennaites must have prayed with unconditional sincerity to the rain gods this year, who in-turn seem to have been pleased. The phrase that first comes into one's mind amidst such incessant rain is "It rained like cats and dogs". What's amusing is that there isn't a proper explanation to that idiom anywhere! Now, this sets me thinking...
I believe it has been cut short from the original phrase, which must have read like "Rained like cat'S and dog'S...PEE"!!...So is it a similie for the way the heavens work in conjunction with the way cats and dogs pee??
Let us see some interesting aspects of these animals' peculiar pee-ing habits.
They <=> rain gods(or)clouds(or)skies(or)heavens
pee <=> rain
master <=> common people
But if one is more observing, similar patterns are found in the lavatorial habits of rural Indian people! So here comes the all-important question...Was the above term coined by an Indian, to divert the attention of the rest of the world away from us and instead towards animals??!! ;)

Let us see some interesting aspects of these animals' peculiar pee-ing habits.
- For starters, they never pee all at once!
- They pee only when they want to and not when forced by others.
- They pee at varying speeds and angles, depending on prevailing conditions and circumstances.
- They choose the remotest of locations to pee!(just like the rain gods choose every other god-damned place except chennai!)
- At times,they irritate by just pee-ing in parts, where just small drops appear at discrete intervals, consuming a lot of time and preventing the master from doing something else!

Interesting analogy :)
Yes you are right, there are no convincing theories to the origin of this phase.. but I found a couple of places where they attempt to explain it :)

The theory which I heard goes something like this. In the olden days they had houses with thatched roofs where the top portion was typically used to keep the animals when it rained. Sometimes the rains were so heavy that it would come in and that's when the animals (cats & dogs) started slipping off and hitting the floor. So they said "It's raining cats & dogs."

@kapil: yeah, i have heard of that one, but even that is only a possibility and not a certainty!!

Hi Vikram H, I'm over here in Hawaii on vacation and found a nice internet connection. I started searching blogs to get some ideas for my site, and fell into this excellent blog you have here. When I came on vacation I knew I'd get to surf the net, but I didn't think I'd get treat like this. The only good blogs are ones with owners like you, actually putting energy into them. Okay, just wanted to say hi and 'you're awesome' - better get back to my research...
good day ~~~

Vikram H, I need a little inspiration... I've read your post 'this post', I enjoyed it so I decided to comment. I've been thinking about my blog and how there are all these people posting strange comments there. Maybe you understand, I'm not sure, but it's tiring to read the numbers of comments that don't have much to do with my stuff. My normal wood dog house website never suffers this because it just sells wood dog house and isn't a blog. Do you have any ideas for how to stop the cluttering of non-relevant comments? Thanks for your great blog. Tips are always welcome...
good day -
