A Moment Of Clarity

Zinda-BAD & Pazhaiya-pet

It's official now. Zinda is indeed a frame-by-frame remake of the Korean movie Oldboy, except for the ending which has been changed to suit the conservative mindset of Indians who would have protested violently if it was for the original! But every other aspect has been blatantly plagiarised by Sanjay Gupta who has become famous among ignorant audiences who presume he's done all the hard work. All his previous superhits have been remakes of famous movies and he even makes sure to copy their taglines!... Kaante was from Reservoir Dogs and Musafir was from U-Turn.

And the latest rumour is that the movie Pudupet by Selvaraghavan is a remake of none other than the brilliant Portugese movie called City of God(but it may not necessarily be true)!

I personally believe that Indians are the biggest plagiarisers of movies, internally and internationally! Ofcourse there are a few great and original directors, but the rest of them are just survivors. A paradigm shift is what's necessary for Indians movies to come of age. Directors and producers should stop looking at including commercial elements or heroic idiosyncrasies but instead concentrate on technical excellence and originality.

It's alarming to know that most directors write dialogues for scenes only on the day of the shooting and on the sets! Contrast this with the high professionalism of Hollywood, where each and every small operation is taken care of by an expert. I mean, in India, how often do we have specialist script/screenplay writers or casting pros? What we see most of the times is a boastful credit screen which screams out boldly:

STORY
SCREENPLAY
DIALOGUES
DIRECTION
"Mr.I-Know-them-all"

And then we also have these occasional starlwarts(whizkids) in the form of Karadi Man T.Rajendar who would spend endless rolls of film and numerous frames just to put his name under every possible title, including MUSICIAN, LYRICIST,
EDITOR, CHOREOGRAPHER, ACTING COACH, POET ...and what not!!

Come on guys, give us a break! Is a movie about representing the beauty in the visual medium or about gratfying one's ego and garnering fame? Grow up India, grow up...And for those of you foreigners who do, please stop referring to all of Indian cinema as BOLLYWOOD!

    Good one..
    i thought Pudhupettai was GodFathers adaptation.

    also i agree to your point we need specialist for screenplay and dialogues.
    latest flick Sivakasi that director wrote one song "Enatha solluvango Manga Readypannugo.." worst tamil lyrics ever...

    Even ManiRatham doesnt take all roles..

  • in a way i think it is ok that these guys lift ideas off hollywood. shows that the tamil movie goers are starting to get out of the regular so-sweet-love-story theme. Gajini., though not anything close to 'Memento'., still brought a new idea to the tamil-movie viewers. I heard some other movie had 'split personality' stuff. and., I hear that there is some indian make of 'Fightclub' coming up.

    Basically what i see good is that., these guys (though there is absolutely no originality) are preparing the indian-language-movie viewers for newer and better ideas.

    I just hope that some smart guys enter the field and brings some originality to it., instead of running another 2 decades of 'copy from hollywood' style movies.

  • u have got to appreciate the fact that movies which are very different from the run of the mill 'boy girl love stories with rubbish stirred to give a new movie' are being made.This is the first step.Noone will be willing to make something which is not commercially viable.Now atleast the directors have got into their minds that good movies sell.The main reason one tries to project himself as jack and master of all trades is for fame.I agree with that view.If they are really good don't they have the right to project it so.It is upto the audiences to judge how good they are.Specialist have a role to play,but in an Indian industry where economics comes first before quality one cannot ask for more

  • @arun: yeah man, lots of people have told me about the class of malayalam films!

    @nirmal: i HATE all of Vijay's movies! they are utter crap!...Manirathnam doesnt take up everything because he's a thorough professional!

    @j.s: oh yeah, Memento is one of my all-time favourite movies, simply mindblowing! And yeah, the Bollywood remake of Fight Club is simply called "Fight Club"! How much worse could it get??!!

    Well let's hope that the filmmakers perception is the same as yours, with regard to copying! ;)

    @anon: when there's quality, the moolah automatically comes in. Why do all of Shankar's movies click? Is it always because of any gimmicks or because of the other talented technicians who assist him?

  • @priya: oh yeah, Pudupettai songs rock! but i sincerely hope that yuvan stops singing in melodious numbers! He makes more use of this nose than his throat!!!

    @ashish: cant help 'em!

    @anon: the battle rages on...:)

    @sayesha: oh then u'd have to check out Oldboy, where there's even more! There's one scene in which the leading man will eat a live octopus as it squirms in his hand!

  • I kind of liked Zinda despite the plagiarism. Don't we go to a Sanjay Gupta movie KNOWING that it would have been plagiarised?

    I have written a review myself
